Metal buildings are everywhere in East Texas — shops, barns, ag buildings, and the barndominiums going up on acreage from Lindale to Bullard. They're fast and tough, but bare metal in this climate has two problems, and our region makes the second one worse than anywhere else in the state. First, radiant heat: a metal roof under the summer sun turns the building into an oven. Second, condensation — and with Tyler's humidity and nearly 46 inches of annual rain, warm moist air meets cool metal almost year-round. The result is the familiar East Texas drip: water forming on the underside of the roof, raining onto equipment, and rusting the building from the inside.
Closed-cell spray foam solves both in one application. Sprayed directly onto the metal, it blocks radiant heat transfer, and because it's water-resistant and acts as a vapor retarder at sufficient thickness, it removes the condensation surface entirely — humid air never touches cold metal again. It also bonds rigidly to the panels, stiffening the whole structure.
For metal in East Texas we recommend closed-cell, full stop. Vapor-permeable open-cell against a metal skin in the wettest part of Texas is the wrong tool. Closed-cell's moisture resistance, ~R-6 to R-7 per inch, and rigidity are exactly what the assembly needs here.
